Whatever someone cooked in the dorm kitchen smelled awful and now it’s in the drains and the whole kitchen stinks – we must all suffer for one person’s exotic food habits. In a poetically just society, their punishment would be to eat only white rice with no salt or butter for a month.
I’m a member of the Cornell Klezmer Ensemble, and our student president related this funny story:
She was at the Club Fair (one of those big events where all the student organizations get together to advertise and get new members), and she needed $10 for securing a booth. She was running around looking trying to get together the money, which she didn’t have, when a guy stopped her and said, “Can I help you?”
She responded, “Oh, I just need to find ten bucks for a booth.”
“Ten bucks!?” the guy said enthusiastically, “I can lend you ten bucks!”
After he gave her the money, she looked at where he had come from: The Cornell Socialist Club.
Well it’s been a long but very successful first two days at Cornell University. So far this feels like the most “collegey” of all my semesters. China and the World looks to be a very interesting history/political theory class on modern China. Mandarin II basically evokes the typically feelings of inadequacy and dread, but at least I’m learning. Physics of Musical sound is not unlike being an active part of an episode of “Bill Nye the Science Guy” (in fact I saw Mr. Nye eating at our cafeteria last semester!). Political Theory and Cinema is very difficult to describe – it’s taught by two professors at once (literally they both talk at the same time), and after about 30 min of rambling on about Plato and philosophical metaphors for the silver screen, one professor looked up at us and said, “See, we come from what is known as the 60s” (he got good laughs). That class seems to be one of those, what you make of it classes; if you put in the effort to be involved, you’ll have a very rewarding experience, but it could also be the opposite.
In other news, I hope you all have been enjoying the comic. I’ve been working very hard to try and give regular updates. Also, in case you haven’t really noticed, TNPPress has inducted a new member, Woody After Hours, by Ben Carter and Paul Westover (and vice versa). I really recommend you look through their comic, and also be sure to check out the other members of TNPPress!
Thanks,
Ian
